The Collegiate at The University of Winnipeg
The University of Winnipeg Collegiate was opened in 1873 under the name of Wesley College. Through its years as United College and now in its present status as an independent school and a division of The University of Winnipeg, the Collegiate has maintained its unique character and has hosted generations of innovative and passionate students. The University of Winnipeg Collegiate tradition is one of academic excellence and accessibility.
The Collegiate is committed to offering grade 10, 11 and 12 students high school programs that provide a transition to post-secondary education. Between 80 and 100 international students, annually attend the University of Winnipeg Collegiate to prepare for university in Canada or in their home country. Our Summer Language programs have been developed for international students who would like to improve their language skills, experience learning on a Canadian university campus and enjoy the natural beauty of our city and province.

Our 2008 Summer Program
Our 4 week program is organized so that English Language classes are held in the mornings and that activity trips, around Winnipeg and the immediately surrounding rural areas, are arranged for afternoons and some evenings. On Saturdays, students will travel on extended trips to parks in rural Manitoba and Ontario. Many trips have an environmental focus, exploring the habitat of indigenous animals and the conservation strategies being used to protect the environment.
The program contains instructional and experiential elements that focus on improving students' listening, speaking skills, reading, writing and grammatical skills. This is accomplished in and outside of the classroom in a welcoming and supportive learning environment.
Maximum class size will be 20 students; with a new class and additional teacher being provided once the capacity is reached. Students will write an English Assessment test when they arrive which will be used to determine the class into which they are placed. All instructors are qualified teachers who have experience working with students learning an additional language. Students will have access to all of the University of Winnipeg facilities including the library, gymnasium and computer labs. We are a wireless campus and students are invited to bring their own laptop computers.
